Worldwide water use has more than tripled since 1950. The severity of drought conditions associated with climate change and increasing populations has put enormous pressure on global water supplies. The California Drought has taught us that we need to plan future water supply well in advance to prevent a crisis from developing. The Southwestern United States and many other highly populated regions around the world all need new sources of additional water. These are incremental supplies of fresh water that cannot be developed locally through conservation, diversion, storage, reclamation, or other means. In considering the development of these new supplies of water, public officials must look at all economic, environmental, and political costs to make informed, rational, and sustainable public policy decisions.
GWS is in the process of developing an interconnected bulk water supply system with diverse sources of new water. We will transport this water from these sources to meet demand and supplement system performance under all conditions. As partners with our exporting and receiving communities, our mandate is to work cooperatively to plan, deliver and manage an integrated and efficient water supply system at a cost-effective price for all concerned.
